Day Two - 8/19/03–Santa Catalina Island!

Did we like it? Yeah! Would we go back? Yeah! Is it “funky?” You bet!

Thar she (he?) blows!!  8/19/03

In addition to having a great time on Catalina, we had a terrific bonus on the ferry ride back to Dana Point. Our Captain brought the boat from flank speed to idle to let us get an up close and personal view of a large dolphin pod about two miles off of Dana Point. He then spotted a Blue Whale “blowing” about 200 yards ahead of us, and slowly closed the distance between us.

All the passengers – including us – “O-o-o-‘d and A-h-h-‘d” each time the whale came up and spouted.

The whale then seemed to tire of our intrusion, came up one last time, and went right for the bottom – raising his (her) fluke about 10 to 15 feet vertical to the ocean's surface. Everyone cheered and applauded! One guy got a great picture. Unfortunately, yours truly did not!

Great job whale!!
